AI Adoption Is Becoming a Sales Management Priority

Artificial intelligence is becoming a regular part of sales activities, but new research suggests that the difference between experimenting with AI and integrating it into everyday sales operations could have a meaningful impact on performance.

A 2026 study by The Sales Management Association, based on responses from 111 sales organizations, examined how companies are using AI, where they are seeing value and what management practices are associated with higher adoption.

One of the most notable findings was the relationship between AI usage and sales performance. Organizations where at least 20% of salespeople routinely used AI achieved their company's sales objectives 71% of the time, compared with 53% among organizations with lower adoption.

The research identifies a correlation, not proof that AI adoption directly causes better sales results. Nevertheless, the difference highlights the importance of how sales organizations approach AI.

The Management Gap

Despite widespread interest in AI, many organizations are struggling to apply it effectively.

The study found that while companies recognize AI's potential in areas such as prospect research, written communication and lead qualification, their actual effectiveness often falls short of expectations.

For example, 70% of respondents considered AI's potential for identifying and qualifying opportunities to be high, yet only 32% considered their organizations effective at applying it in this area.

This gap presents a clear challenge for sales managers. Access to AI tools is only the starting point. Teams also need guidance, practical training and clearly defined expectations about how the technology should support their work.

Three Priorities for Sales Leaders

The research identified three management practices associated with higher AI adoption: visible executive support, investment in training and enablement, and incorporating AI proficiency into hiring requirements.

For front-line sales managers, these findings translate into practical responsibilities.

Managers need to demonstrate how AI can improve everyday sales activities, coach their teams on relevant applications and establish consistent expectations for its use. They also need to identify where AI is genuinely improving productivity rather than simply adding another tool to an already crowded technology environment.

From Experimentation to Execution

The opportunity for sales organizations is not simply to adopt more AI. It is to integrate AI into the way their teams sell, manage opportunities and engage customers.

For sales managers, that means treating AI adoption as an ongoing sales effectiveness initiative rather than a one-time technology rollout.

The competitive advantage may ultimately belong to the organizations that turn AI from an individual productivity tool into a consistent part of their sales management system.
