AI Adoption Is a People Challenge, Not Just a Technology Challenge

Artificial intelligence is attracting significant investment, but many organizations are discovering that implementing AI is considerably easier than getting employees to use it effectively.

In a recent article, change management firm Prosci examines the barriers preventing organizations from translating AI investments into measurable business results. Its research points to a familiar challenge: the biggest obstacles are often organizational and human, rather than technical.

According to Prosci, a study of 1,107 professionals found that 63% of organizations identified human factors as a primary challenge in AI implementations. Employee proficiency, resistance to change, leadership alignment and insufficient training all contribute to the problem.

The findings reinforce an important distinction between deploying new technology and achieving meaningful adoption.

The Role of Leadership in AI Adoption

For sales managers, this distinction has immediate implications.

Introducing AI tools to a sales team does not guarantee that those tools will become part of everyday selling activities. Salespeople need to understand how the technology supports their work, develop the skills to use it effectively and have confidence in the changes being introduced.

Managers play a critical role in making that happen.

Rather than simply announcing new AI capabilities or measuring how frequently employees use them, sales leaders should focus on how those capabilities improve the sales process. That means identifying practical use cases, involving salespeople in the transition, providing role-specific training and reinforcing new behaviours through ongoing coaching.

Prosci's ADKAR Model offers a structured approach to supporting individuals through change, addressing Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability and Reinforcement.

Adoption Is the Real Measure of Success

The growing availability of AI tools creates opportunities to improve prospect research, lead qualification, sales preparation and customer engagement. But those benefits will remain theoretical if sales teams don't incorporate the technology into their daily routines.

For sales managers, the challenge is not simply introducing AI. It is leading a change in how their teams work.

The organizations that realize the greatest value from AI may ultimately be those that invest as much attention in their people and processes as they do in the technology itself.
